Identification
Pale, cream-colored bodies. Live in large underground colonies and build visible mud tubes along foundations, piers, and slab edges to travel from soil to wood without drying out.
Habitat
Nest in the soil, often near a home's foundation, and forage constantly for wood contact points, including through cracks as small as 1/32 inch.
Why They're A Risk
The most damaging termite species in the U.S. A colony feeds on wood around the clock and can go undetected for years before structural damage shows.
Signs To Watch For
Mud tubes on the foundation, hollow-sounding wood, and discarded wings near windows and doors after a swarm.
